International Men’s Health Week with MedAdvisor

June 14, 2023

So it is that time of year again! The week when we collectively turn our attention to an often-neglected topic—men's health. International Men's Health Week is here, and we at MedAdvisor are passionately backing this essential initiative. There is often a common misconception that men should solve their problems alone, but here at MedAdvisor we think it is about time to debunk that myth! So let's take this journey together and explore why this often forgotten and neglected topic is such an important awareness week and vital to both the physical and mental health of the men in our lives.

What is Men’s Health Week & why it’s important to us?

We celebrate International Men's Health Week annually, aimed at bringing awareness to health issues that disproportionately affect men. It's an invitation to have vital conversations, particularly around mental health. But why, you might ask, is men's health singled out?

Well, it's no secret that societal expectations often pressure men to be the "strong, silent type." Sadly, these stereotypes can deter men from seeking help when they need it most, especially concerning mental health. That's where the keyword "why is men's health week important" hits home. It's essential because it underscores that it's okay, and indeed crucial, for men to prioritise their health and well-being. We as individuals and a society need the men that we care about to also take care of their own health, without stress, worry or fear of judgment.

When is Men’s Health Week held?

Mark your calendars! Every year, International Men's Health Week takes place in the middle of June, the week of the 12th - 18th. It's a global initiative—after all, men's health matters everywhere. It's a heartening sight to see countries from all corners of the world rallying to raise "international men's health week" awareness.

How can you show your support during Men’s Mental Health Week?

Let's roll up our sleeves and see how we can contribute! Your voice matters in helping shatter the stigma around men's mental health. Share posts on your social media, or start a conversation within your community. Consider supporting fantastic organizations dedicated to men's mental health, like Beyond Blue.

Remember, support doesn't always have to be a big grand gesture—it starts with simple acts of kindness. To be honest, those little acts of kindness and compassion are the things that add up and make all of the difference in someone's life! Reach out to the amazing men in your life and ask, genuinely, how they're doing (and actually listen to understand). Hold space for them with absolutely no judgment and show them that you are actually here for them in a way that many of them are there for you.

We asked around to see how family, friends and colleagues could support men if different ways.

“Good mental health starts with us, others can help to recognise the unhealthy behaviors we sometimes rely on, these are too often exacerbated through a quiet pressure of social norms and expectation of what it is to be a 'man'. you commonly see younger men wanting to 'puff themselves up' in an attempt to appear stronger or louder than other men. we are conditioned to be this way early on. we need to be better at seeing this in ourselves, society, friends, family and also coworkers need to call this out so it may not influence younger generations to what could be perceived as acceptable. they too also need avenues to address issues some men can display in aggression."

The stigma behind Men's Mental Health

Speaking of stigma, let's delve a little deeper. There's a considerable taboo surrounding men expressing vulnerability, leading many to suffer in silence. It's a narrative we must change. It begins with promoting open discussions about men's health, both physical and mental, and emphasizing that seeking help isn't a sign of weakness but rather, a strength.

“Myth: Men should solve their problems alone. A common myth is that men should handle their problems independently without seeking assistance. In reality, seeking support from friends, family, or professionals is a crucial part of maintaining good mental health."

We as a whole at MedAdvisor second that seeking out support rather than dealing with physical and mental challenges alone is the way to go!

Raising awareness of Men's Mental Health in your social circle

You have the power to make a difference within your circles. Encourage openness about mental health among your friends, family, and colleagues. Be the one to ask, "Hey, how are you really doing?" These heartfelt conversations can be life-changing and potentially life-saving. You will never actually know what is going on in the minds of those around us.

Wayne Marinoff, the Sales & Marketing Executive General Manager at MedAdvisor, emphasizes the significance of prioritizing his own mental health through the following practices:

  • "I ensure I get enough sleep each night. Quality sleep is essential for maintaining a healthy mind.
  • I believe in the old saying, 'you are what you eat.' Therefore, I make it a point to eat well and prioritize a balanced diet.
  • Talking about my problems with my wife and close friends is crucial. The act of sharing and seeking support is incredibly therapeutic.
  • Regular exercise is non-negotiable for me. Not only does it release endorphins, but it also contributes to a healthy body, which in turn nurtures a healthy mind.
  • To maintain a healthy work-life balance, I make it a priority to switch off work at least one day per week, mainly on Saturdays.
  • Booking regular holidays is an essential aspect of my self-care routine. Having something to look forward to brings excitement and rejuvenation."

"I really appreciate the flexible working arrangement that MedAdvisor supports. We are trusted to be in the office as much or as little as we like as long as we can do our jobs as required. Working from home through COVID made me realize that I like being around others in person when it was taken away from me, and I believe it makes a difference to my own mental health. So, I make an effort to come into the office when I know other teams and groups come in”

When it comes to men who may be hesitant to seek help for their mental health, Richard Tregunna, Business Development Manager - Health Programs, shares his advice.

"I haven't had to deal with mental health issues too much, but if I were to give any advice, I would strongly encourage finding someone they feel comfortable with, whether that be a friend or a professional, to talk to. Start small and grow from there. This may seem like a big step, but be brave, and eventually, you will look back and realize it was the best thing you ever did."
